Jennifer (Goose) Krempien of St. Albert became the first wheelchair basketball player to be inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame during Friday’s ceremonies in Toronto.

Krempien, 38, was among six individuals selected by the Canadian Paralympic Committee for hall of fame honours.

The Paul Kane High School alumna was a member of Canada’s powerhouse women’s wheelchair basketball team from 1991 to 2008 and was co-captain from 2004 to 2008. She competed in five Paralympic Games, helping Canada win three gold and one bronze.

The 2008 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Association’s female athlete of the year played on four world championship-winning teams from 1994 to 2006 and was a tournament all-star in 1998 and 2002.

Krempien was also Canada’s flag bearer at the opening ceremonies of the 2007 Parapan American Games.

She retired from international competition after the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, as Canada finished fifth overall.

Krempien was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and in January she was presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, honouring significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

The St. Albert Cardinals continued their blazing start in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League with two wins in three games last weekend against SEEBA.

Saturday at Legion Memorial Park the Cardinals split a doubleheader with the SEEBA 1 team.

Starting pitcher Tanner Karpinski gave up one run on five hits and struck-out two over four innings in the 4-1 victory.

SEEBA outhit the Cardinals 7-3 and committed four errors, compared to two for the home team.

Right-fielder Tyler Mecir drove in two runs.

In game two SEEBA (2-3) scored four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit en route to the 5-3 decision.

SEEBA banged out nine hits and the Cardinals had seven.

Connor Burns tossed a nine-hitter over six innings. He fanned six batters, walked two and four runs were earned.

Sunday at John Fry Park the Cardinals improved to 5-1 with a decisive 11-2 score against SEEBA 2 (5-5).

Karpinski led all batters with three hits as the Cardinals pounded out 12 in total.

Erik Sabrowski, Alex Marthiensen and Greg Dekinder took turns on the mound.

Thursday’s home game against Spruce Grove White Sox 2 (1-4) was rescheduled for July 11.

The next game for the Cardinals is Wednesday versus SEEBA 2 at 6:30 p.m. at John Fry Park.

Three football players from St. Albert were among 40 in Grades 10 and 11 named to the Team Alberta roster for the 2013 Football Canada Cup.

Receiver Tyler Turner and linebacker Graeme Loerke of the Paul Kane Blues and linebacker John Brouse of the St. Albert High Skyhawks will huddle up at the July 15 to 22 tournament in Moncton, N.B.

The team was selected from the 115 players who attended last weekend's final tryout camp at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

The Football Canada Cup is a national championship for provincial teams at the U18 level. Last year Alberta lost to Quebec in the final at London, Ont.

The senior B St. Albert Miners split two games during last weekend’s road trip in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

Saturday against the Mountaineers in Calgary, Jordan Cornfield’s hat trick and captain Nate Schmidt’s two goals and two assists paced the attack in the 10-9 win.

David Ahl’s game winner with 70 seconds remaining capped off a three-goal comeback charge by the 2012 provincial finalists.

Steve Tessarola and Chad Gendall scored shorthanded in the first period.

Tyler Douglas and Nick Petz fired singles. In net was Leland Lebrecque.

Sunday in Okotoks the Miners lost 8-7 to the Raiders despite a five-point performance by Graedon Cornfield. He tallied twice, as did Douglas, and singles were sniped by Sean Reid, Jordan Cornfield and Gendall. Mike Heibert was in net.

Chris Schmidt, Ted White and Matt Hansen were unavailable last weekend because of work commitments and Aidan Inglis was tied up at his stag.

The Miners (3-1) are back on the floor Wednesday against the Spruce Grove Slash at 8 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

The bantam AAA St. Albert Cardinals suffered a weekend sweep in Spruce Grove.

In the 15-5 loss to Okotoks Dawgs Black, starting pitcher Spencer Dronkelaar faced 13 batters over 2.3 innings and allowed three hits while striking out three.

Dylan Gates slugged a towering two-run homer and Anthony Owen and Peter Corrigan had two hits apiece.
